'Jazz on the Levee' to honor Holloway

(Helena - West Helena, AR) - Juneteenth Jazz Concert tours will be gracing the Delta with their 4th annual Arkansas "Jazz on the Levee" Helena Arts Festival in tribute to Helena native and master jazz saxophonist Red Holloway on April 16th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Featured artist Phillip Stackhouse along with the Delta Jazz Percussion Ensemble will represent Helena-West Helena as they continue the “Jazz on the Levee” tradition of preserving the unique expression of freedom through jazz, and the spiritual essence of people whose lives continue to be the creative catalyst of all America's music.

Stackhouse is a Helena native who found the love of music at a young age through his mother’s inspiration and church.

"The love of jazz and blues runs through my blood, and it is an honor to be able to continue my grandfather’s legacy," Stackhouse beamed.

Stackhouse’s grandfather, Houston Stackhouse Sr., learned to play the guitar from the recognized master of the Delta blues, musician Robert Johnson. Johnson was ranked fifth in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.

Stackhouse Sr. played with notable musicians through the 1960s, including Boyd Gilmore, Houston Boines, Frank Frost and Baby Face Turner. Throughout his legacy Stackhouse Sr. also learned to play the harmonica, the mandolin, and the violin. Stackhouse has been recognized for his saxophone talents that according to Myers "reflects the legacy of Red Holloway."

Stackhouse also plays the drums and has performed with his band “Little Biscuit” in Forrest City, Memphis and Little Rock.

"I feel like I was born a musician and I thank God for the blessing of being able to hear and play music," said Stackhouse.

The legacy of Stackhouse musicians continues as according to Stackhouse, his family has always been musically centered.

"This is what I love to do, this is what I want to do," he said. "I feel that I am driven by my grandfather’s experience and I am truly blessed to be able to continue his legacy."

Stackhouse has produced his first album entitled, "P. Stackz Presents the Sounds of Me," due for release April 23rd.

"I am very excited about this," he said. "I worked on this album over the course of a little over a year and a half and I am proud to have been able to get the opportunity to write and perform my own songs."

Stackhouse will be headlining in Los Angeles with Red Holloway himself on June 30th.
